For a long time, the conversation around MPE-friendly DAWs treated Ableton Live as a reliable but secondary option — MPE worked since Live 11, but the depth of editing and instrument support lagged behind DAWs built around per-note expression from day one. Over the course of Live 12's release cycle, that gap has narrowed considerably, and the changes are worth a closer look for anyone building an MPE rig around Ableton.
Granulator Gets MPE
One of the more notable additions is MPE capability for the granular instrument built on Robert Henke's Granulator engine. Grain-based synthesis has always paired well with expressive, evolving control sources, and with MPE support now built in, players can shape parameters like note bend, vibrato, and glissando on a per-note basis while grains stretch and blur underneath. It's a meaningful pairing — granular textures tend to reward continuous, organic modulation more than static parameter tweaks, and per-note MPE data is a natural fit for exactly that kind of shaping.
Drawing Expression Curves Instead of Recording Them
Live 12 also added the ability to create Glissando and LFO curves directly on selected notes for MPE parameters, rather than requiring every expressive gesture to be played in and recorded from a physical controller. That's a workflow shift with real practical value: producers without an MPE controller on hand — or without one that captures a specific gesture cleanly — can now draw pitch glides, vibrato shapes, and other per-note modulation directly into the piano roll and have it play back exactly as MPE data. This mirrors a broader trend across the MPE software ecosystem this year, where several tools have focused on letting producers create expressive performances without necessarily owning specialized hardware.
Working Outside 12-Tone Equal Temperament
Live 12 expanded tuning flexibility as well, allowing producers to work with alternate tuning systems both through Live's own devices and through any MPE-capable plugin loaded in a session. For musicians using LinnStrument-style grid controllers or other instruments built around microtonal and non-Western scales, this closes a workflow gap that previously required more manual routing or third-party tools to bridge tuning systems with MPE data.
A Bi-Timbral MPE Instrument and a New Max for Live Device
Among Live 12's newer instruments is a bi-timbral, MPE-capable synth built for deep sound shaping using two macro oscillators, aimed at producers who want textural, experimental tones without diving into a fully modular environment. Live 12 also ships with an MPE-enabled Max for Live device available across all editions — including Push — designed to make expressive chord and progression playing more intuitive one key or pad at a time.
Ctrl-e Integration
For players using Expressive E's Ctrl-e software — the free companion engine that now powers the Osmose CE controller — Live 12 enables MPE mode by default when the plugin is loaded, removing a manual setup step that used to trip up new users pairing the two products.
Where This Leaves Live in the MPE Conversation
Bitwig remains the reference point for native, ground-up MPE architecture, and that's unlikely to change given how central per-note expression is to Bitwig's core design. But Live 12's cumulative additions — a granular MPE instrument, curve-based expression editing, expanded tuning support, and smoother controller integration — mean Ableton users no longer need to treat MPE as a bolted-on feature they're merely tolerating. For producers already invested in the Ableton ecosystem, Live 12 is now a genuinely capable home for MPE work, not just a compatible one.
