If you play an MPE controller and haven't looked into the CLAP plugin format yet, it's worth a few minutes of your attention. CLAP — short for CLever Audio Plug-in — was co-developed by Bitwig and u-he, and while it was originally pitched as a modern, open alternative to VST3 and AU, one of its most consequential features for expressive-controller players has quietly become one of its strongest selling points: native, per-voice note expression.
What Makes CLAP's Note Expression Different From MPE
MPE works by spreading notes across multiple MIDI channels so that each note can carry its own pitch bend, pressure, and timbre (CC74) data — a clever workaround for a fundamental limitation of the 1980s-era MIDI 1.0 specification, which was never designed with true per-note control in mind. It works remarkably well in practice, but it's still a workaround, with real constraints around channel allocation and how many simultaneous notes a device or plugin can track.
CLAP takes a different approach. Rather than repurposing MIDI channels, it gives plugins a dedicated note-expression protocol with per-voice parameters for pitch bend, volume, pan, general expression, brightness, vibrato depth, and aftertouch — addressed directly to individual voices rather than spread across channels. Some developers have taken to describing it as "MPE on steroids," since it delivers the same expressive goals as MPE without needing the channel-splitting workaround at all. CLAP instruments can additionally speak MIDI 2.0 or standard MPE, so support for existing controllers isn't going anywhere.
Which DAWs Actually Support It
As of 2026, CLAP adoption varies significantly by DAW. Bitwig Studio, as the format's co-creator, has full native support and was the first mover. REAPER added full CLAP support back in version 7, and FL Studio picked it up in a 2024 update. Studio One has partial support, while Cubase/Nuendo has announced support without a firm timeline. Notably, Logic Pro is unlikely to adopt CLAP at all, since Apple has consistently pushed its own Audio Units (AU) format instead, and Pro Tools remains locked to AAX.

Why This Matters If You're Building an MPE Rig
For most players, the practical difference between MPE-over-MIDI and CLAP's native note expression won't be dramatic today — both get you expressive, per-note control, and most current-generation MPE-capable synths still work perfectly well over standard MPE. But the architectural advantages start to show up at the edges: CLAP's thread-safe design allows true multicore audio processing, which can translate into better performance when you're running large multi-timbral, per-note-modulated patches with an Osmose, Seaboard, or Continuum feeding dozens of simultaneous voices with independent modulation.
There's also a longer-term signal worth watching. As more instrument developers build CLAP versions of their synths alongside — or eventually instead of — VST3, the industry's center of gravity around "how do we do per-note expression properly" is shifting away from workarounds bolted onto 40-year-old MIDI, and toward formats designed for it from the ground up. MIDI 2.0 itself is moving in a similar direction, and it's likely that CLAP's note expression and MIDI 2.0's per-note messaging will end up converging in how instruments are built over the next few years.
What to Do About It Right Now
If you're on Bitwig or REAPER, it's worth checking whether your favorite instruments have a CLAP build available — many will, given the format's growing adoption among boutique and open-source developers — and comparing CPU load against your existing VST3/AU version on a heavy multi-voice MPE patch. If you're on Logic or Pro Tools, none of this changes your workflow today, since standard MPE remains extremely well supported on both. Either way, CLAP is a piece of plugin-format plumbing worth understanding, because it's shaping how the next generation of expressive instruments gets built.
