If you're shopping for an MPE controller in 2026, the hardware is only half the decision. Which DAW you produce in still determines how much of that per-note expression actually survives the trip from your controller into your tracks — and eight years after MPE was formally adopted into the MIDI specification, support across major DAWs remains far from uniform.

Bitwig Studio: Still the Reference Implementation

Bitwig Studio continues to be the DAW most MPE musicians point to as the gold standard. Its MIDI engine was built with per-note modulation as a first-class concept rather than a bolted-on feature, which means controllers like the ROLI Seaboard, LinnStrument, and Osmose are handled natively without workarounds. Bitwig's per-note modulators let you route expression data to essentially any parameter in a device chain, and that flexibility extends to third-party plugins as well as Bitwig's own instruments.

Ableton Live: Solid and Improving

Ableton Live added MPE support back in Live 11, and it has continued to mature since. Stock instruments including Wavetable, Drift, and Sampler all handle MPE input well, and as of July 2026, MPE mode is now enabled by default when using Expressive E's Ctrl-e plugin — a small but telling sign of how the two companies' ecosystems are converging. Live's implementation isn't quite as deep as Bitwig's for complex per-note modulation routing, but for most musicians working with MPE-native instruments, it's a dependable choice.

Logic Pro: Partial Support Only

Logic Pro remains the weak link among the major full-featured DAWs. A handful of Logic's stock instruments can receive per-note data, but there's no comprehensive, native MPE implementation comparable to what Bitwig or Live offer. For Mac-based musicians who want to build a workflow around MPE controllers, this is still the most-cited reason to run a second DAW alongside Logic, or to lean on third-party MPE-capable plugins that handle their own internal expression mapping regardless of host support.

FL Studio and Pro Tools: Different Paths, Both Incomplete

FL Studio has taken a notably different route: rather than building out MPE support, Image-Line appears to be betting on MIDI 2.0's per-note controller capabilities instead, effectively skipping MPE as an intermediate step. Whether that pays off depends on how quickly MIDI 2.0 hardware and host support actually spreads — for now, it leaves FL Studio users without a direct path to today's MPE controllers.

Pro Tools is further behind: Avid previewed its first MPE support at NAMM 2026, but as of this writing it hasn't shipped in a public release. Given Pro Tools' dominance in post-production and film scoring — areas where expressive, per-note orchestral control is increasingly in demand — that gap is one worth watching closely over the next few release cycles.

Smaller and Specialized Tools

Elsewhere in the ecosystem, support is a mixed bag. Reason still has no native MPE handling as of version 13, while Cakewalk Sonar and LUNA offer only pass-through support, meaning MPE data can travel through the DAW to a compatible plugin but isn't natively interpreted by the host itself. Reaper, by contrast, has quietly built a reputation for flexible, if less polished, MPE handling thanks to its scriptable architecture — a route that appeals to more technical users willing to configure things themselves.

What This Means for MPE Musicians

The practical takeaway hasn't changed much over the past couple of years: if native MPE support inside the DAW matters to your workflow, Bitwig and Ableton remain the two safest choices. If you're committed to Logic, Pro Tools, or FL Studio for other reasons, you're generally better served by leaning on plugins with their own internal MPE handling — instruments that interpret per-note pitch bend, pressure, and timbre themselves regardless of how much the host DAW understands — rather than waiting on the DAW vendor to catch up.

As MIDI 2.0 adoption slowly increases, it's worth watching whether it unifies this fragmented landscape or adds a second axis of compatibility questions for MPE musicians to navigate. For now, the DAW you choose still meaningfully shapes how much of your controller's expressiveness actually makes it onto the track.
