MPE has mostly lived on dedicated hardware — keyboards, touch surfaces, fretboards. Elastic OSC, from developer MoMinstruments, is one of a growing handful of apps making the case that a phone screen can be an expressive MPE surface too, and its latest update pushes that idea further with full MPE support across iOS, Android, and now desktop.

An 8-Voice Synth Built on Mutable Instruments' Plaits

Elastic OSC is an 8-voice polyphonic macro-oscillator synthesizer built around the algorithms from Mutable Instruments' Plaits module, one of the most-loved digital oscillators in the Eurorack world. The app distills Plaits' 24 oscillator models — spanning virtual analog, FM synthesis with DX7 patch compatibility, physical modeling, wavetables, drum synthesis, and even speech synthesis — down to four core parameters per voice, making a famously deep module approachable on a touchscreen.

Reviewers at CDM (Create Digital Music) have described the app as putting Plaits' algorithms "on an evolving rollercoaster," and the touch-first interface is built to encourage exactly that kind of continuous, hands-on sound morphing rather than static patch selection.

What the MPE Update Actually Adds

The headline feature in Elastic OSC's recent update, covered by Synth Anatomy and rekkerd.org, is native MPE — unlocked via an in-app purchase. Once activated, the app exposes its "touch sphere" controls as proper per-note expression dimensions: glide (pitch bend) on the X axis, slide (timbre, mapped to CC#74) on the Y axis, and pressure (channel aftertouch) on the Z axis.

Crucially, this works two ways. Producers can play expressively using the phone or tablet's own touchscreen via a built-in touch-sliding pedal, or they can plug in an external MPE hardware controller — the app has been tested with devices including the Erae Touch I/II and the Expressive E Osmose — and route that controller's per-note data straight into Plaits' synthesis engine.

From Phone App to Desktop Plugin

Elastic OSC's platform reach has expanded quickly through 2026. It launched as an iOS app, added Android support alongside the MPE update, and then, around Superbooth 2026, arrived as a desktop plugin — a direct port of the mobile app packaged as AU and VST3 for Mac and VST3 for Windows. According to developer testing, it runs cleanly inside Ableton Live, Bitwig, Reaper, Cubase, FL Studio, and Logic Pro, meaning the same MPE-mapped touch spheres that work on a phone screen now also respond to a hardware MPE controller inside a full DAW session.

Why It's Worth Watching

Mobile music-making has historically been treated as a lightweight, sketch-first category, disconnected from the more "serious" world of MPE controllers and modular synthesis. Elastic OSC pushes back on that divide from both directions: it brings a genuinely deep, Eurorack-grade synthesis engine to a touchscreen, and it brings genuine per-note MPE expression — not a simplified approximation of it — to a $10-ish app rather than a $1,000+ controller.

For MPE players, the practical upside is flexibility. An Elastic OSC session can go from a quick idea sketched with fingers on a train, to a fully expressive performance recorded with an Osmose or Erae Touch at home, to a mixed-and-finished track inside a DAW using the same plugin and the same sound — without ever needing to reprogram the instrument for each context. That kind of continuity across mobile, hardware, and desktop is still rare in the MPE ecosystem, and it's a template other developers are likely to follow.
