The original Osmose always contained two products in one box. There was the keybed — a mechanism where each key moves in three dimensions, with a gesture vocabulary far richer than aftertouch — and there was the EaganMatrix, the formidable physical modelling engine licensed from Haken Audio. Plenty of owners loved both. Plenty of others bought it for the keys and drove software instruments with it, leaving one of the most capable synthesis engines ever shipped in a keyboard sitting idle.

Osmose CE is Expressive E's answer to that second group. Announced ahead of Superbooth 2026, it keeps the keybed and drops the onboard engine, arriving at $999 for 49 keys and $1,199 for 61. Against the full Osmose, that is a substantial saving for players who were never going to program the EaganMatrix.

The Keybed Is Unchanged

This is the important detail. Osmose CE uses exactly the same keybed as the flagship — not a simplified or cost-reduced variant. The seven expressive gestures remain: Tap, Press, Pitch Bend, Vibrato, Shake, Strum, and Note-Off.

That gesture set is what distinguishes Osmose from other MPE controllers rather than the sound engine. A Seaboard asks you to learn a continuous surface; a LinnStrument asks you to learn an isomorphic grid. Osmose asks you to play something that still feels like a keyboard, then adds depth-of-press and lateral movement on top of a familiar action. For pianists and keyboard players moving into MPE, that reduced learning curve has consistently been the selling point. Note-Off velocity in particular — expression applied to how you release a key, not just how you strike it — is a dimension almost nothing else in the MPE world exposes as cleanly.

Ctrl-e: Solving the Preset Problem

Every MPE controller manufacturer eventually confronts the same issue. The instrument is only as expressive as the patches you play through it, and the vast majority of software presets were designed for a keyboard that sends note-on velocity and nothing else. Load a stock library patch, press into a key, and nothing happens.

Expressive E's response is Ctrl-e, a free companion platform bundled with Osmose CE. It hosts multiple MPE-capable engines and ships with 900+ presets curated and mapped specifically for the Osmose gesture set, drawn from Expressive E's own instruments (Imagine, Noisy) plus partner developers including AAS, Synapse Audio, Kilohearts, GForce, Dawesome, and Vital.

Two workflow details do more work than the preset count suggests. Presets can be browsed directly from the hardware in supported DAWs, so you are not reaching for a mouse mid-session. And each preset exposes eight pre-mapped macros, meaning the parameters most worth touching are already on the surface rather than buried in a plugin's modulation matrix.

There is a trade-off worth naming: this is a curated walled garden. The presets sound good and respond correctly because someone mapped them deliberately, but the moment you step outside Ctrl-e into a third-party plugin, you are back to doing the mapping yourself. Whether that feels like a strength or a limitation depends on whether you enjoy patch design or just want to play.

Who Should Consider It

Good fit: you already work primarily in software, you want the Osmose playing experience without paying for an engine you will not use, and you value a large bank of correctly-mapped sounds on day one.

Less good fit: you want a self-contained instrument that makes sound without a computer, or you specifically want the EaganMatrix. In both cases, the full Osmose remains the product.

Worth considering alongside: the 61-key Osmose for players who need five octaves, or a Continuum-family instrument if you want a continuous surface rather than discrete keys.

The Broader Signal

Expressive E has also moved production to a dedicated facility in Poland, which — combined with a lower-priced controller variant and a free software ecosystem — reads as a company positioning for volume rather than boutique runs. That is a meaningful signal for MPE generally. The format's biggest constraint has never been the specification; it has been that expressive controllers were expensive, hard to find, and awkward to pair with sounds that responded properly. A $999 entry point with 900 ready-made presets attacks all three problems at once.

For anyone who has watched MPE hover at the edge of the mainstream for a decade, that is the more interesting story here — not the hardware, but the fact that the hardware is getting cheaper while the sound libraries are getting better.
