Most MIDI controller marketing leans on numbers: key count, velocity curves, polyphony. Expressive E's Osmose CE, which began shipping its 49-key ($999) and 61-key ($1,199) versions back in April, takes a different approach. Instead of leading with specs, the company built its entire pitch around a vocabulary of seven playing gestures — and how consistently those gestures translate into sound is turning out to be the more interesting story than the hardware itself.
What the Seven Gestures Actually Are
The Osmose CE keybed recognizes Tap, Press, Pitch Bend, Vibrato, Shake, Strum, and Note-Off as distinct, simultaneously trackable inputs per note. That's a wider gesture set than most MPE controllers bother to name explicitly. A Seaboard or a LinnStrument will happily report pressure, slide, and pitch bend data, but they generally leave it to the player (or the patch designer) to decide what those continuous streams mean musically. Osmose CE's approach is to pre-label the gestures and then build software around that vocabulary from the ground up.
Tap and Press split what most keyboards collapse into a single "how hard did you hit the key" velocity value — Tap captures the initial strike, Press captures sustained downward force after the note has already spoken, similar in spirit to aftertouch but continuously variable per note rather than triggered past a threshold. Vibrato and Shake separate side-to-side finger motion into two distinct gestures depending on speed and amplitude, letting a slow wobble and a fast tremor drive different parameters. Strum reads the diagonal motion of a finger crossing the key surface, borrowed conceptually from how a string player's bow or a guitarist's pick interacts with a note already in motion. Note-Off — usually just a binary event on a normal keyboard — carries its own release velocity and shape here.
Why Naming the Gestures Changes the Design Problem
The practical effect shows up in Ctrl-e, the free companion plugin bundled with Osmose CE. Ctrl-e ships with more than 900 presets built by partner developers — Synapse Audio contributes around 30 presets from Dune 3 alone, alongside sound engines from AAS, Kilohearts, GForce, Dawesome, and Vital — and each preset arrives with eight macros pre-mapped to a subset of the seven gestures. Because the gesture set is standardized across the whole library, a player who's learned what Shake does on one patch has a reasonable expectation of what it'll do on the next, even when the underlying synth engine is completely different.
That consistency matters more than it might sound. One of the recurring frustrations with expressive controllers historically has been that "expression" is patch-specific: pitch bend range, aftertouch curves, and slide sensitivity all vary preset to preset and instrument to instrument, so a technique you develop on one sound doesn't transfer to the next. By fixing a shared gesture vocabulary at the software layer rather than leaving it entirely to individual patch designers, Expressive E is effectively trying to give Osmose CE players a technique that travels — closer to how a violinist's vibrato technique works the same way regardless of which piece they're playing, rather than being reinvented per song.
How This Fits the Rest of the MPE Landscape
It's worth being clear about what Osmose CE is and isn't. Underneath the gesture layer, it's still speaking standard MIDI Polyphonic Expression — per-note pitch bend, timbre, and pressure across MPE's Manager/Member channel scheme — so the keybed works with any MPE-aware plugin or DAW, not just Ctrl-e. Bitwig, Logic Pro, and Ableton Live will all happily receive its output as ordinary MPE data. The seven-gesture framing is a software and UX decision layered on top of that open standard, not a departure from it.
That's arguably the more sustainable strategy than building a closed ecosystem. Expressive E's earlier flagship, the original Osmose, paired the same keybed with its own EaganMatrix synth engine licensed from Haken Audio. Osmose CE drops the built-in engine entirely and bets that a well-designed, standardized gesture vocabulary sitting on top of open MPE data is worth more to buyers than a proprietary sound engine locked to the hardware. Given how crowded the MPE synth-engine market already is — u-he, Arturia, Native Instruments, and ROLI's own Equator2 all compete for the same MPE-aware plugin slot — that bet looks reasonable.
For players weighing whether the $999 entry price is worth it over a cheaper MPE pad controller, the seven-gesture system is really the thing to evaluate hands-on, not the spec sheet. Numbers on a page don't tell you whether Tap and Press feel meaningfully distinct under your fingers, or whether Strum reads your intent accurately at speed. That's something only time on the keybed will answer.
