Expressive E released firmware 2.3 for the Osmose synthesizer on September 24, 2026, and while the update leaves the instrument's EaganMatrix-powered sound engine untouched, it substantially changes how the keybed behaves once you plug it into a modern studio. The two headline additions are deep DAW control integration and a free Ctrl-e license bundled with every Osmose owner's account, unlocking a library of more than 900 expressive presets built by outside developers.
Turning the Keybed Into a Control Surface
Osmose has always been sold as a synthesizer first, a controller second. Firmware 2.3 narrows that gap considerably. The update adds transport and metronome control, playhead and loop management, track navigation, scene and clip switching, and mixing control for whatever track is currently selected — all accessible without leaving the keybed. A current-track macro layer rounds things out, so a handful of the instrument's touch strips can be mapped to whatever parameters matter most in the moment.
The mode button, previously reserved mostly for switching between playing surfaces, now doubles as a Shift key. Holding it exposes undo and redo, quantization, and tempo nudging — the kind of transport housekeeping that used to mean reaching for a mouse mid-performance. Expressive E says the goal is to let a player stay hands-on-keys through an entire session, moving from composing to arranging to mixing without breaking the physical connection to the instrument. The update works across Ableton Live, Cubase, Bitwig Studio, and Logic Pro, reflecting how fragmented DAW-control implementations have become across the MPE hardware world — a controller that only talks to one DAW is a much harder sell in 2026 than it was a few years ago.
A Free Ctrl-e License for Every Owner
The second major piece of 2.3 is software rather than firmware. Every Osmose owner now receives, at no extra cost, a full license for Ctrl-e, Expressive E's companion plugin that was originally built for the company's controller-only Osmose CE. Ctrl-e ships with pre-mapped expressive sound banks from a cross-section of well-known synth developers, including Kilohearts, Synapse Audio, Dawesome, Applied Acoustics Systems, GForce Software, and Vital — more than 900 presets in total, each built specifically around gestures like pitch bend, vibrato, and pressure rather than retrofitted onto a static patch.
For existing Osmose owners this is effectively a second instrument arriving for free: a plugin layer that widens what the hardware can drive beyond its own internal engine. Hardware and software now talk to each other more directly, too — Osmose automatically detects when a Ctrl-e track is selected and lets a player browse sounds from the instrument itself, without touching a mouse or a laptop screen.
Smaller Changes With Outsized Impact
The update bundle also includes a redesigned bottom action bar for quick semitone transposition and effects toggling, a rebuilt USB-MIDI setup process aimed at cutting down on connection dropouts, more consolidated capture of expressive performance data for recording, and the ability to use Osmose's DIN MIDI ports as a general-purpose MIDI-to-USB interface for other gear. None of these are headline features on their own, but together they read as Expressive E cleaning up rough edges that have accumulated since Osmose first shipped.
Why It Matters
Firmware updates that add DAW control to an existing MPE keybed aren't new, but bundling a nine-hundred-preset software library for free is a bigger deal than it might first appear. It lowers the cost of entry for Osmose owners who never picked up Ctrl-e or the Osmose CE, and it strengthens the case that Expressive E is building one unified expressive-performance ecosystem rather than a handful of separate products. For a category where the biggest complaint is often "great hardware, but what do I actually play through it," a free half-a-thousand-plus presets from six different synth makers is a meaningful answer.
