One of the more interesting expressive sequencing tools of the last few years has just shed its biggest limitation. Iftah has released Sting as a native plugin, freeing the acid-line generator from its Max for Live wrapper and making it available in VST3, AU and CLAP formats across macOS, Windows and Linux.
For anyone who has watched Sting demos over the years and quietly filed it under "things I can't use because I don't run Ableton Live," this is the update that changes the calculation.
From 2013 Experiment to Cross-Platform Plugin
Sting started life as a 2013 experiment and spent most of its existence as a Max for Live device, tightly integrated with Ableton Push. Version 2 pushed it further into performance territory, but the Max for Live dependency meant the audience was capped at Live Suite owners.
The new build removes that ceiling entirely. Sting now loads in Bitwig Studio, Logic Pro, Reaper, Cubase or anything else that hosts VST3, AU or CLAP — which matters a lot for MPE users, since Bitwig and Live are the two DAWs most commonly paired with expressive controllers. Linux support is a genuinely unusual inclusion for a commercial music plugin and speaks to the developer's independent, hands-on approach.
What Sting Actually Does
Sting is not a conventional step sequencer. It generates acid lines algorithmically, then hands you performance controls to shape them in real time. The plugin ships with four engines:
Algo — the core algorithmic generator, producing 303-style lines from probabilistic rules rather than fixed patterns.
Arp — an arpeggiator layer for chord-driven material.
Bass — focused on low-end sequencing with the slide and accent behaviour that defines the acid idiom.
Counterpoint — the most compositionally ambitious engine, generating a second voice that moves against the primary line rather than simply doubling it.
The result is a tool that behaves less like a sequencer and more like an improvising partner. You steer it; it proposes material. That framing is exactly why it resonates with players who already think in terms of gesture and response rather than grid entry.
Why It Matters for Expressive Players
Sting's relevance to the MPE world is about workflow philosophy rather than per-note pitch bend. Expressive controllers changed how many musicians approach playing: less quantised programming, more continuous, hands-on shaping of a sound while it's happening. Sting occupies the same territory from the sequencing side — it's designed to be performed rather than programmed.
Feed its output into an MPE-capable instrument and the combination gets interesting. A generated line driving a physical modelling synth, with your own controller layered on top for pressure and timbre, is a very different proposition from a static pattern locked to a piano roll. Because Sting now runs as a normal plugin, routing its MIDI output to any instrument in your project is trivial — no Max for Live device chain, no Live-specific routing workarounds.
It's also worth noting the direction of travel here. Several of the most interesting expressive-music tools of the last few years started inside Max for Live and have since broken out into standalone plugins. That migration widens the pool of people who can use them, and it tends to accelerate development once a tool is no longer tied to one host's release cycle.
Pricing and Availability
The paid build of Sting is €35 plus VAT, available directly from Iftah's website. A free build remains available, capped at seven downloads per day — an unusual distribution model, but one consistent with the developer's approach of keeping the tool accessible while supporting continued work on it.
The 2.1 update is free for existing users, so anyone who bought the Max for Live version isn't being asked to pay twice for the transition.
The original Sting 2 Max for Live device also remains available for Push-centric setups, where the hardware integration is still the fastest way to work.
Worth a Look
Tools like Sting sit in a useful gap: they're not instruments, not effects, and not quite sequencers either. They generate musical material you then perform with. For musicians building rigs around expressive controllers — where the whole point is real-time nuance rather than editing after the fact — that category is increasingly where the interesting work is happening.
With the host restriction gone, there's no longer much reason not to try it. The free build makes the evaluation cost roughly zero, and the €35 paid version is priced well below most comparable sequencing tools.
