What "Native" Actually Means Here
Logic Pro supports MPE recording, editing, and playback directly, without third-party MIDI routing scripts or workarounds. That means per-note pitch bend, per-note pressure (aftertouch), and per-note timbre (typically mapped to CC74/Y-axis) all get captured correctly when you record from a controller like a Roli Seaboard, a LinnStrument, or an Expressive E Osmose. Crucially, this data isn't flattened into a single MIDI channel on the way in — Logic preserves the per-note channel structure that MPE relies on, so the expressive detail survives all the way from your controller to your session.
Which Instruments Actually Support It
This is where things get a little more nuanced. Native MPE compatibility in Logic depends on MIDI Mono Mode, a setting available on a specific set of Logic's stock instruments: Alchemy, EFM1, ES2, Quick Sampler, Retro Synth, Sampler, Sculpture, and Vintage Clav. Switching one of these instruments into MIDI Mono Mode is what actually enables it to interpret incoming MPE data correctly rather than treating every note the same way.
Third-party instruments need their own MPE implementation to work properly inside Logic — the DAW's native support handles the transport and editing side, but the instrument itself still has to know what to do with per-note expression data. Getting a controller working in Logic Pro is straightforward. Connect the controller, load one of the MIDI Mono Mode-capable instruments (or a third-party MPE synth), and enable MPE input in the instrument's MIDI settings if it isn't detected automatically. Most modern controllers advertise themselves as MPE devices over USB or MIDI 2.0, so Logic will typically configure the channel range on its own. From there, recording works exactly like recording any other MIDI performance — the expressive data just comes along with it.
Where Logic Still Lags
Logic's MPE support is genuinely usable, but it isn't as deeply integrated as Bitwig's end-to-end MPE workflow, particularly around visualizing per-note expression curves in the piano roll and routing MPE data through modulation chains. For composers working primarily "in the box" with stock instruments and a handful of third-party MPE synths, though, the gap has narrowed enough that switching DAWs purely for MPE support is a much harder case to make than it was even a couple of years ago.
