The hexagonal grid gives you more neighbors per key than a rectangular one, which matters when a tuning system has more than twelve pitches per octave and you need them within reach.

Be honest about the price. At nearly four thousand dollars, the Lumatone is not a casual second controller, and it is large and heavy enough that it isn't a casual gigging one either. The case for the Lumatone is specific: you want to play music that twelve-tone equal temperament can't express, you want a physical layout where that music is actually fingerable, and you want polyphonic pressure control on top. That's a narrow brief, but nothing else covers it as completely. Lumatone's learning materials are worth reading before committing — the retraining involved is real, and the hex grid is genuinely unfamiliar territory for a trained pianist.

The addition of proper pitch and mod wheels is a small change, but a telling one: it signals an instrument being refined for working musicians rather than treated as a finished curiosity.
