Incoming slide and pressure information from an MPE controller is used to drive octave transposition and note duration for each individual note in the pattern, in real time. That means a standard up/down/random arpeggiated pattern can be reshaped continuously just by how hard you press or how far you slide a finger — no separate modulation mapping required.
Arpex still functions as a normal arpeggiator with any regular MIDI controller, including a full 'Style' menu, a step sequencer for velocity and duration, and BPM-synced or free-running speed with swing options. But it's specifically designed around controllers like the ROLI Seaboard and Sensel Morph, and it's a good example of what becomes possible once a device is built MPE-first rather than MPE-adjacent.
MPE Envelope and MPE Modifier: Shaping the Data Itself
Alongside Arpex, Isotonik's catalogue includes devices like MPE Envelope, a polyphonic modulation device that applies per-note envelope shaping across an MPE performance, and MPE Modifier, which lets players reshape or remap the incoming pitch bend, pressure, and slide ranges of a controller before they ever reach an instrument. That second category matters more than it might sound: MPE controllers don't all report the same ranges or response curves, and a device that can rescale or curve that data on the way in makes it possible to get consistent behavior out of an instrument regardless of which controller is feeding it.
Why This Matters
Native Live MPE support handles routing and recording, but it doesn't editorialize on the data itself — it passes per-note pitch bend, pressure, and slide through more or less as received. Devices like these sit in that gap, treating MPE data as something to be actively shaped rather than just transported.
