Musicians chasing more expressive ways to shape sound now have a lower-cost entry point into gesture control. MiMU, the music technology company founded by Grammy-winning artist Imogen Heap, has released Glover as a standalone desktop application — taking the mapping software originally built to power the famous MiMU Gloves and making it available to anyone with a compatible motion-tracking device.
From Gloves-Only Software to an Open Platform
Glover started life as the creative mapping environment built specifically for MiMU's sensor-laden performance gloves, which translate hand position, finger bends, and arm movement into MIDI or OSC data that feeds into software like Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and MainStage. After roughly a decade of internal development and refinement on stage with artists including Imogen Heap and, more recently, Ariana Grande, MiMU has decoupled the software from its flagship hardware.
That means Glover can now take input from a much wider range of gear: standard smartphones, Leap Motion hand-tracking sensors, micro:bit boards, and — eventually — additional third-party motion devices MiMU plans to support. Paired with the free companion app Gliss, which turns a phone's built-in sensors into a wireless controller that streams straight into Glover, the barrier to trying gesture-based performance has dropped from a specialized hardware purchase to essentially the phone already in most musicians' pockets.
Where This Fits Alongside MPE
Glover doesn't speak the MPE protocol directly the way a Roli Seaboard or Expressive E Osmose does, but it shares the same underlying goal: capturing continuous, per-gesture expression rather than reducing a performance to fixed note-on/note-off events. For MPE users, Glover is a natural companion tool — many performers already route MPE data from a keyboard or grid controller for pitch, pressure, and timbre, while adding gesture-based control from Glover for macro-level expression like filter sweeps, spatial effects, or live looping gestures that a keyboard surface can't easily capture.
The MiMU Gloves themselves remain the premium hardware option, with current orders for the gloves expected to ship by November 2026. But Glover's release means musicians can prototype and perform with movement-based control immediately, using hardware they likely already own, before deciding whether the full glove system is worth the investment.

For DAW users already comfortable routing MPE or standard MIDI from expressive controllers, adding a Glover-driven gesture layer is a relatively low-friction way to expand a performance setup — particularly for live sets where a second, hands-free (or off-keyboard) layer of expression can add movement and visual interest as well as sonic depth.
A Growing Toolkit for Expressive Performers
It's a useful reminder that expressive performance technology isn't limited to per-note keyboard and grid controllers. Where MPE hardware like the LinnStrument or Osmose captures expression through touch — finger position, pressure, and slide across a physical surface — Glover captures it through movement in three-dimensional space. The two approaches are complementary rather than competing: a composer could sequence a melodic line with per-note pitch bend and pressure on an MPE keyboard, then layer in sweeping filter or spatial automation driven by hand gestures picked up through a phone or Leap Motion sensor mapped in Glover.
That kind of layered setup used to require expensive, purpose-built sensor rigs. By decoupling its mapping software from the MiMU Gloves hardware, the company is effectively inviting a much larger pool of musicians — bedroom producers and touring performers alike — to experiment with gesture control using devices they likely already own. Whether that leads to a meaningful uptick in gesture-augmented live sets remains to be seen, but the technical barrier that kept this kind of performance in the hands of a small number of specialist artists like Imogen Heap has, at least for now, gotten noticeably lower.
As tools like Glover lower the cost of entry, the broader ecosystem of gesture, touch, and per-note expression continues to grow more accessible — and increasingly interoperable — for musicians building expressive rigs around MPE gear.
