What It Does
MPE Insight connects to any class-compliant MPE controller and displays its output in real time: per-note pitch bend, pressure or aftertouch, and the third expression dimension (often slide or Y-axis movement, depending on the controller). Rather than presenting that data as a flat MIDI monitor log, the app renders it as live visual architecture, with multiple display styles including bars, rings, particle fields, a flythrough tunnel, a kaleidoscope mode, contour maps, a spider web view, and a DNA-helix-style renderer. Users can switch between these visual styles on the fly without interrupting the underlying gesture capture.
Under the hood, the app is organized into eight modules that can be freely dragged, resized, and rearranged on a shared canvas: Aura, Grand Staff, Note Timeline, Expression Breakdown, MIDI Stream Log, PB/Mod, and an on-screen keyboard, among others. That modularity means a player can set up a layout focused on note-level detail for practicing a specific expressive technique, or zoom out to a broader view for a live-visual performance setup.
More Than a Pretty Face
Beyond visualization, MPE Insight functions as a genuine diagnostic tool. Because MPE implementations vary meaningfully between hardware — different controllers assign channels, ranges, and gesture curves in their own ways — being able to see exactly what a controller is transmitting is useful for troubleshooting unexpected behavior in a DAW, verifying that a controller's MPE zone configuration is correct, or simply understanding how a new piece of hardware actually behaves before committing to it in a performance or recording session.
The app also includes recording functionality, capturing everything including MIDI clock, with exported files carrying the actual tempo that was played. That makes it possible to record an expressive performance in MPE Insight and import it directly into a DAW project, preserving the same feel that was captured live rather than requiring the player to re-quantize or reconstruct tempo after the fact.

MPE Insight launched at an introductory price of €24.49, discounted from its regular €34.99, with the launch pricing running through July 11, 2026. It's available now as a direct download from Kalkau's site, and works with any MPE-compliant controller — meaning it isn't tied to a specific hardware brand.
