One of the odd realities of playing an MPE controller is that most of what makes it special is invisible. Per-note pitch bend, pressure, and slide data stream out of your Osmose, Seaboard, or LinnStrument in real time, but unless a plugin happens to display it, there's no way to actually see what your playing is generating. A new tool called MPE Insight is aimed squarely at that gap.
What MPE Insight actually does
MPE Insight is a desktop app that connects to any MPE controller and renders its output as live, per-note graphs: pitch bend, pressure or aftertouch, and expression (slide/timbre) are all displayed as separate, color-coded lanes that update in real time as you play. It also includes a built-in MIDI monitor and the ability to record a performance's expression data for later review, which turns it into something closer to a diagnostic tool than a performance instrument in its own right.
The app launched at an introductory price of €24.49, available through July 11, 2026, according to coverage from Rekkerd, which described it as turning MPE data into "visual architecture" — a way of making an otherwise abstract data stream tangible.
Why this matters for learning MPE
Most musicians coming to MPE from a standard MIDI keyboard background have to build an intuition for how their physical gestures map onto sound, largely through trial and error inside whatever synth they're using. That process is slower than it needs to be, partly because most instruments only expose MPE data indirectly, through however they've chosen to modulate a given parameter. If your pressure isn't doing what you expect, it's often unclear whether the problem is your controller, your MIDI routing, your DAW's MPE settings, or the synth's modulation mapping.
