One of the persistent challenges with MIDI Polyphonic Expression is that it's largely invisible. When you play a ROLI Seaboard, a LinnStrument, or an Expressive E controller, every note is quietly carrying its own pitch bend, pressure, and timbre data — but unless a plugin's interface happens to visualize that stream, it's easy to play expressively without ever seeing exactly what your gestures are sending. Developer Christophe Kalkau's new app, MPE Insight, is built to close that gap.

What MPE Insight does

MPE Insight is a real-time performance and monitoring environment for expressive MIDI. Plug in any MPE controller, and the app renders what it's transmitting — per-note pitch bend, pressure/aftertouch, and timbre or expression data — as a live visual layer rather than a scrolling list of numbers.

The app ships with eight modules that can be freely dragged, resized, and rearranged on a shared canvas: Aura, Grand Staff, Note Timeline, Expression Breakdown, MIDI Stream Log, PB/Mod, and an on-screen Keyboard, among others. Visualization styles range from straightforward bars and rings to more elaborate options like particle fields, a flythrough tunnel, a kaleidoscope, contour maps, a spider web layout, and a DNA helix. It's as much a performance visual as it is a diagnostic tool — the kind of thing that could plausibly end up projected behind a live MPE performance as easily as it sits in a practice room.

Beyond visualization, MPE Insight includes a built-in MIDI monitor and full recording capability, capturing MIDI clock alongside note data so exported files preserve the actual tempo that was played. That makes it useful not just for watching expression happen, but for archiving and reviewing performances afterward — handy for teaching, practicing, or troubleshooting a controller that isn't behaving the way you expect.

DRIFT: expression for non-MPE keyboards

Perhaps the most interesting feature for musicians who don't yet own a dedicated MPE controller is DRIFT, a built-in processor that can add expressive motion to an ordinary MIDI keyboard. DRIFT applies randomized per-note pressure, pitch, and timbre movement to notes played on a standard keybed, along with octave layering and a chord machine with scale lock. It won't replace the nuance of playing a true pressure- and position-sensitive surface like a Haken Continuum or a Sensel Morph, but it gives producers a way to experiment with MPE-style modulation using gear they already own, and it's a useful teaching tool for understanding what MPE data actually looks like in motion.

MPE Insight launched with an early-bird price of €24.49, available through July 11, 2026, and the app has already seen incremental updates, with version 2.3.0 adding refinements to its real-time performance environment. Why this matters for the MPE community

Tools like MPE Insight fill a specific gap in the ecosystem: most synths and DAWs treat MPE as an input to be consumed, not a signal to be examined. For controller manufacturers, that makes it harder for players to diagnose mapping issues or understand why a preset feels different across two different keybeds. For educators and new MPE players, it turns an abstract concept — "your finger position controls timbre" — into something you can actually watch happen in real time.

As more DAWs and plugins add MPE handling (Bitwig's Note Expressions, Arturia's expanded MPE support across its V Collection instruments, and Pro Tools' MPE preview shown at NAMM 2026 among them), tools that make the underlying data legible are likely to become more valuable, not less. MPE Insight is a solid example of the kind of utility software that grows up around a maturing standard — not a synth or a controller, but the missing window into what your expressive gestures are actually doing.
