Most new synth plugins arrive as variations on familiar themes: another wavetable engine, another virtual analog, another FM reimagining. Phaseburn One, announced on 29 August 2026, takes a genuinely odd starting point. Its primary oscillator is a phase-locked loop — a control circuit lifted from radio engineering — turned into a playable voice.
For players using expressive controllers, that choice matters more than it might sound. A PLL is a circuit that constantly chases a target frequency, and what makes it musically interesting is precisely what makes it unreliable.
What a Phase-Locked Loop Does Here
In its everyday use, a phase-locked loop keeps one oscillator synchronized to a reference signal. You find them in radio receivers, in pitch-tracking guitar pedals, and in harmonizers. Phaseburn's developers describe their implementation as neither a PLL module bolted onto a conventional architecture nor a tracking effect: the loop is the synth's main sound source.
The PLL oscillator listens to a reference oscillator and continuously adjusts to match it. When tracking is tight, you get a clean tone with a faintly alive quality. When you loosen the loop, things get considerably more interesting. The oscillator overshoots, breaks off, recaptures the frequency, and stumbles again — a character that no static waveform can reproduce.
That behaviour is worth thinking about in the context of per-note control. A parameter that produces different results depending on how hard you push it is exactly the kind of parameter that rewards a pressure or slide gesture. Loop tightness is one of those. Mapped to a continuous controller dimension, it turns a single held note into something that can be pushed from stable to unstable and back within the same articulation.
The PLL section also offers octave, fine-tune, chaos, FM, and saturation controls, so it functions as a full-featured oscillator rather than a novelty.
Three More Oscillators and a Node Patchbay
Phaseburn One is not a one-trick instrument. Alongside the PLL sit three more sound sources:
A morphing oscillator with 12 modes covering classic shapes, a seven-voice detuned unison saw stack, additive synthesis, vowel synthesis, and spectral wavetables. A vector phase-shaping oscillator that bends a waveform's phase around a movable inflection point with adjustable X and Y coordinates, plus a formant mode. And a sub-oscillator reaching down three octaves.
The synth also accepts external audio, routing the incoming signal in as the PLL's reference — a processing path that opens up resynthesis-style workflows. A node-based patchbay lets you build signal paths in series or parallel, including placing effects inside feedback loops.
Filtering comes from a four-pole saturating ladder (lowpass, bandpass, notch, highpass) and a morphing state-variable filter. Six effect algorithms follow: distortion with four types, bit-crusher, a granular freezer, four-mode chorus, delay, and an FDN reverb.
Modulation and What's Missing
Modulation is generous: four assignable multi-wave LFOs, three loopable AHDSR envelopes, four modulation step sequencers, plus aftertouch and velocity as assignable sources. A probability-based groove sequencer with a scale-aware note pool and per-note probability rounds things out.
Here is the honest caveat: Phaseburn has not published MPE specifications for One. Aftertouch and velocity are confirmed modulation sources, but whether that aftertouch is channel-wide or per-note, and whether the synth handles MPE channel zones and per-note pitch bend correctly, is not stated in the announcement material.
That is a fair question to put to a developer during a public beta, and this is a public beta. If per-note expression matters to your playing, the beta period is the moment to ask — and to test with your own controller rather than assume.
Availability
Phaseburn One is available now as a free beta download ahead of a release scheduled for 15 October 2026. The developers are offering a free license to the ten most active beta testers and discounts to others who contribute meaningfully to testing. At release it will cost €149.
It runs as a standalone application and as VST3, AU, and CLAP plugins on macOS (native Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows. The beta currently ships with 29 presets, a number the developers say will grow before launch. The engine is written in 64-bit Rust with custom DSP throughout the signal path.
Why It's Worth a Look
Synthesis methods that behave predictably are easy to program and easy to exhaust. The instruments that hold up over years tend to be the ones with a bit of resistance in them — engines that push back, drift, and occasionally fail in ways you can steer rather than eliminate.
A phase-locked loop chasing a moving target is a good source of that resistance. Whether Phaseburn One turns out to be a serious tool or a fascinating detour depends on how deeply the instability can be controlled, and a free beta is a cheap way to find out.
