Every producer has done it at some point: no controller within reach, so you tap out a melody on the computer keyboard using your DAW's typing-keyboard mode. It works, badly, and everyone accepts the tradeoff. Polyend has just shown a prototype that treats that habit as a product idea rather than a workaround.
Unveiled on 26 August 2026 at Gamescom in Cologne — an unusual venue for a synth company, and a deliberate one — Polyend Keys is a low-profile aluminium mechanical QWERTY keyboard that also functions as a MIDI controller.
What It Actually Is
Physically, Keys is a proper computer keyboard. Hot-swappable Kailh low-profile switches mean you can change individual switches without soldering. The keys are backlit, there is a full number pad, and yes, Ctrl-Alt-Delete is present. It connects over Bluetooth or USB-C, and runs from either USB power or an internal rechargeable battery.
The musical trick is in the layout. The function-key row and number row are arranged as a three-octave piano layout, using white and grey keycaps so the note positions read at a glance. The same keys you type an email with can play a line into your sequencer.
Above them sit nine rotary encoders, freely assignable to MIDI CCs for controlling a DAW or external hardware. If you are not playing music, they can be reassigned to volume, scrolling or screen brightness. A small integrated display gives feedback on whatever the encoders are currently doing, and Polyend has said it will be available to other applications and future features.
On the back there is USB-C for data and charging plus a TRS MIDI output, so Keys can address hardware directly rather than only talking to a computer.
The Open-Source Firmware Is the Interesting Part
Polyend has confirmed that the firmware is open source. For a mainstream product that is a meaningful commitment, and for the expressive-controller community it is arguably the headline.
Open firmware on a device with a piano row, nine encoders, a display and a MIDI output means the community can build alternative note layouts, custom scale mappings, sequencers, or controller modes that Polyend never planned. The mechanical-keyboard world has spent a decade building exactly this kind of ecosystem around QMK and similar projects, and that culture transfers well.
It also means that if the hardware ever exposes per-key pressure data, someone will write an MPE output mode for it whether or not Polyend does.
Aftertouch and Pressure: In Development
The obvious criticism arrived within hours of the announcement, and it is a fair one: mechanical switches are binary. Press or no press. No velocity, no pressure, no continuous data — which is most of what makes a controller expressive rather than merely playable.
Polyend appears to have anticipated it. In comments on the company's own forum, Polyend's Mitch Lantz indicated that pressure sensitivity and aftertouch are in development, with a likely approach of placing a pressure-sensitive film beneath the mechanical switches — a technique comparable to what Teenage Engineering used on the KO II. Readers should treat that as a public statement of intent from a prototype-stage project, not a confirmed specification.
If it ships, the implications are more interesting than they first appear. A per-key pressure layer under a piano row is, functionally, the raw material for polyphonic aftertouch. Whether Polyend chooses to transmit that as channel pressure, poly aftertouch, or a proper MPE zone would be a firmware decision — and with open firmware, a community-modifiable one.
Where It Fits
Nobody should expect Keys to replace a Seaboard, a LinnStrument, an Osmose or a Continuum. Typing switches have roughly a 1mm travel and a click; that is not a surface for sculpting a note.
The realistic use case is the desk. A single object that types, plays and controls, with a MIDI DIN on the back and a battery inside, is genuinely appealing for anyone working in a small space or on the move. Sketching a chord progression without reaching for a keyboard, then grabbing an encoder to move a filter, is a workflow that fits how a lot of people actually work in a DAW.
For MPE players specifically, Keys is worth watching for one reason: it is a mass-market product whose maker is publicly discussing per-key pressure, on open firmware, at a price point that will almost certainly sit well below dedicated expressive hardware. That combination has a way of moving expectations for the whole category.
Availability
Keys is a prototype. Polyend has announced neither price nor release date, and both the backlighting and the pressure layer may or may not survive to production. The company has said it will share more as development continues.
