For years, HALion occupied an awkward position in the MPE conversation. It was arguably the most programmable sampler-synthesizer hybrid on the market — a platform with its own scripting language, macro page designer, and a synthesis toolkit deep enough that other developers built commercial libraries on top of it. And yet, if you played it from an expressive controller, you were left doing manual MIDI channel gymnastics. With version 7.5, released on 4 August 2026 as a free update for all HALion 7 owners, that finally changes.

What Changed

HALion 7.5 arrives as part of a double anniversary: 30 years of VST and 25 years of HALion. Steinberg marked the occasion with free legacy plugin reissues and a deep discount on the full version, but for expressive players the headline is a single line in the changelog — MPE support.

That means per-note pitch bend, per-note pressure, and CC74 timbre control are now handled natively across HALion's voice architecture, rather than requiring a workaround layer or a multi-instance setup. Given that HALion combines granular synthesis, FM, wavetable, virtual analog, and full-blown sampling in one engine, the practical implication is significant: any of those sources can now be driven by per-note gestures from a LinnStrument, Osmose, Seaboard, or ERAE Touch.

Two other 7.5 features matter more than they first appear for MPE users. Real-time Decompose splits an incoming sample into tonal and noise components on the fly, and Spectral Snapshot captures a moment in a sample's spectrum for resynthesis. Both create material where a continuous controller dimension has something meaningful to modulate. A sampler that only crossfades velocity layers gives pressure very little to do; a sampler that can morph between tonal and noise content in real time gives it a job.

Why Samplers Have Lagged on MPE

There is a structural reason samplers were late to MPE compared to synthesizers. In a subtractive or FM synth, per-note modulation targets are obvious — filter cutoff, oscillator index, wavetable position. In a sampler, the underlying material is fixed. You can pitch it, filter it, and crossfade between layers, but you cannot easily make it brighter in the way an FM operator gets brighter, because the brightness is baked into the recording.

Developers have solved this in different ways. Some rely on dense round-robin and dynamic layer sets, which works but consumes enormous amounts of disk and RAM. Others move toward spectral or granular playback, where the sample is decomposed into components that can be recombined continuously. HALion 7.5 takes the second route, and the fact that MPE and the new spectral tools shipped in the same update suggests Steinberg understood they were two halves of the same problem.

Practical Notes for MPE Players

A few things worth knowing before you dive in:

Zone configuration. HALion follows the standard Lower Zone convention — channel 1 as master, channels 2–16 for per-note data. Most controllers default to this, but if you are running a device configured for the Upper Zone, check your controller settings first.

Pitch bend range. MPE's default per-note bend range is ±48 semitones. If HALion is set to a conventional ±2, glissando gestures will feel drastically compressed. This is the single most common source of "MPE isn't working" reports across every plugin, not just this one.

Existing presets. Enabling MPE does not retroactively map pressure and timbre in factory patches that were designed for a conventional keyboard. Expect to open the modulation matrix and assign those dimensions yourself. For anyone who has spent time in HALion's macro page editor, this is familiar territory; for newcomers, it is the steepest part of the learning curve.

Voice count. Per-note expression means every held note carries its own modulation stream. Complex HALion patches with layered zones and heavy effects can hit CPU limits faster than the same patch played from a standard keyboard.

The Bigger Picture

The 2026 pattern is consistent: MPE is arriving as a free point release on established platforms rather than as a paid flagship feature. Ultra 1.1, Expressive E's Noisy 2.6, and now HALion 7.5 all followed that model within weeks of each other. That is a good sign for the ecosystem. It means developers increasingly treat per-note control as a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator worth charging for.

For HALion owners who already have a controller sitting on the desk, the update costs nothing and takes an afternoon to explore. For MPE players who wrote HALion off years ago, it is worth a second look — the platform's depth was never the problem.
