Hybrid wavetable synths don't always get the MPE treatment right away, so it's worth flagging when one catches up in a meaningful way. Tone2 has released Icarus 3.1, a free update for existing Icarus 3 owners that extends the synth's MPE support into Legato and Mono modes — a detail that matters more than it might sound.
Why Legato and Mono Mode MPE Matters
Most MPE implementations focus on polyphonic playing: each finger gets its own MIDI channel, and pitch bend, pressure, and timbre data travel independently per note. That works well for chords and layered textures, but it leaves out a common performance technique — monophonic lead lines played with legato phrasing, where expressive controllers are often at their most useful. A player sliding between notes on an Expressive E Osmose or a Haken Continuum wants that same per-note pitch and pressure data to carry through even when the synth voice itself is set to mono or legato behavior.
With 3.1, Icarus now reads MPE data correctly in those modes, so glides, pressure swells, and slide/timbre changes translate properly into a single sustained voice instead of getting flattened or ignored. For sound designers using MPE controllers to play solo synth or lead patches — think expressive brass, woodwind emulations, or vocal-style leads — this closes a gap that made mono patches feel noticeably less responsive than poly ones on the same hardware.
What Else Is in the Update
The 3.1 release isn't a single-feature update. Alongside the MPE work, Tone2 added:
Custom skin support, including a new default skin designed to make Icarus's signal path easier to read at a glance — useful for anyone patching complex multi-layer sounds where the previous interface could get visually dense.
Wavetable editor improvements, including the editor now remembering the last file location used, which removes a small but persistent friction point for anyone building custom wavetables regularly.
Pitchwheel behavior refinements, tightening up how pitch data is interpreted — a change that pairs naturally with the MPE work, since accurate pitch handling is foundational to expressive per-note control.
Bug fixes, including a workaround for a Windows 11 issue affecting the vertical layout of the Segoe UI font in the plugin interface, and a fix for a rare compatibility issue with trackpads on Mac.
Tone2 notes the update is fully downward compatible — existing songs and patches load without any conversion steps, so producers with established Icarus projects can update without worrying about broken presets.
