FM synthesis and MPE have always been an odd couple. The classic Yamaha-style architecture was built around fixed operator ratios and envelope-driven timbral change — not around a player continuously reshaping each note with their fingertips. So when a hardware brand known for deliberately lo-fi, chip-derived FM ships its first plugin with MPE baked in, it's worth a closer look.

Twisted Electrons released vMEGAfm in August 2026, a software emulation of its MEGAfm Mk1 hardware synth — the boutique box built around the YM2612-flavoured FM chip sound of late-80s Sega consoles. The plugin runs on macOS (VST3/AU), Windows (VST3) and iPadOS (AUv3), with a standalone build on every platform.

A 12-voice chip synth, not a DX clone

The engine is four-operator FM with sine-wave operators and eight algorithms, spread across 12 voices. That's a deliberately narrow palette compared to modern six-operator monsters, and that's the point: the MEGAfm sound is bright, brittle, and slightly broken in a way that a cleaner FM implementation smooths away. Every operator is exposed on the panel rather than buried in menus, which matters a great deal once you start assigning expression.

Twisted Electrons has a long track record in gritty digital hardware — the MEGAfm itself, plus the TwistFM and Crazy8 lines — but vMEGAfm is the company's first venture into plugin territory. The full parameter documentation is published in the desktop manual and a separate iOS manual.

How the MPE implementation works

vMEGAfm supports lower-zone MPE with up to 12 independent voices. Each note carries its own pitch bend, pressure and slide (CC74), and — this is the useful part — pressure and slide can be routed to separate modulation buses rather than being hardwired to volume and brightness.

That distinction is what makes MPE genuinely interesting on an FM engine. On a subtractive synth, pressure mapped to filter cutoff gives you an intuitive "push harder, open up" gesture. FM has no filter doing the heavy lifting; timbre comes from operator ratios and modulation index. Route slide to modulator level and a small vertical finger movement walks a note from a clean sine through buzzing metallic overtones into full digital breakup. Route pressure to a second operator's ratio and you get pitch-warping artefacts that no filter sweep can reproduce.

Because each of the 12 voices is independently addressed, you can hold a chord and push only the top note into distortion while the lower voices stay clean. On 4-op FM that produces a kind of controlled instability — one voice curdling while the rest of the chord holds its shape — which is difficult to achieve any other way short of stacking multiple instances.

Presets that actually demonstrate the feature

vMEGAfm ships with 109 factory presets: 99 standard patches and 10 built specifically for MPE. The MPE bank appears automatically when MPE mode is enabled, which is a small but genuinely thoughtful piece of design. Too many plugins announce MPE support and then hand the user a preset library where every patch was voiced for a standard keyboard — the expression dimensions technically function, but nothing in the factory content shows you what the engine does under your fingers.

The ten MPE patches are built around expressive bends, pressure-driven timbral shifts and vertical slide gestures, which gives players on a LinnStrument, Osmose, Seaboard or Exquis an immediate reference point for how the developer intended the routing to be used.

Price and availability

The desktop version launched at an introductory €39.99, rising to a regular price of €49.99 after the intro window closed at the end of August 2026. The iPadOS AUv3 version is sold separately through the App Store. Both are available via the Twisted Electrons site.

Why this release matters beyond one plugin

There's a broader pattern here. MPE is no longer arriving mainly through flagship expressive instruments built from the ground up for per-note control. It's increasingly turning up in niche, character-driven plugins — a chip-FM emulation, a granular sampler, a free physical modelling toy — where the developer treats it as a standard input format rather than a headline feature.

That's arguably the healthier stage of adoption. When MPE shows up in a €40 FM plugin from a boutique hardware maker, it stops being a specialist concern and starts being something plugin developers implement because their users expect it. For anyone who already owns an MPE controller, it means the library of instruments that respond properly to your playing keeps quietly growing — and often at the cheap end of the market.
