Few software synths carry the kind of reputation that u-he's Zebra has built over the past two decades. Zebra2 became a go-to modular workhorse for sound designers across film, games, and electronic music, prized for its open-ended architecture and huge tonal range. This spring, after more than ten years of development, u-he finally shipped its successor: Zebra 3, and one of its headline additions is native MPE support.

A Long Time Coming

Zebra 3 went through a four-month public beta running from December 2025 through April 2026 before its official release on April 20. u-he has described the project as an entirely new development rather than a simple update to Zebra2 — the underlying engine, modulation system, and interface were all rebuilt from the ground up while preserving the modular philosophy that made the original such a flexible sound-design tool.

For a company known for taking its time with major releases, the wait matches the scope of what shipped. Existing Zebra2 owners who purchased before November 1, 2022 can upgrade for €30, while new licenses are priced at €249.

What's New Under the Hood

Zebra 3 introduces spline-based morphing oscillators and through-zero FM oscillators, giving sound designers new ways to sculpt evolving timbres. The filter section has been expanded significantly, adding physical-modeling tools like modal resonators and comb filters, a ring modulator with frequency shifting, and a polyphonic EQ/resonator module.

On the modulation side, Zebra 3 ships with four Pitch modules, four ADSR envelopes, four LFOs, four multi-stage envelope generators (MSEGs), four Mappers, and four Mod Math modules — a substantial expansion over Zebra2's already deep routing options. Combined, these give patch designers an enormous number of ways to shape a sound over time, which is exactly where MPE support becomes interesting.

Why MPE Matters for a Synth Like This

Zebra has always been a synth built around modulation depth rather than preset convenience, which makes it a natural fit for per-note expression. With MPE enabled, players using controllers like the Osmose CE, a LinnStrument, or a Seaboard can route per-note pitch bend, pressure, and slide directly into Zebra 3's modulation matrix — targeting filter cutoff, oscillator morph position, or any of the synth's many modulation destinations on a note-by-note basis.

That's a meaningful shift for a synth with Zebra's install base. Sound designers who have spent years building complex Zebra2 patches for film and game work now have a path to add genuine per-note nuance to those patches without switching to a different instrument. Zebra 3 also adds microtuning and MTS-ESP support, which pairs naturally with MPE controllers that are often used for non-standard tunings and expressive glissando work.

Format and Platform Support

Zebra 3 is available in CLAP, VST3, AU, and AAX formats across macOS, Windows, and Linux — a broader platform footprint than many competing synths, and notable for Linux users in particular, who have relatively few high-end modular synths to choose from.

The Bigger Picture

Zebra 3's MPE support arrives as part of a broader wave of mainstream software instruments adding per-note expression this year, following moves from companies like Xfer Records and Native Instruments. For years, MPE controller owners were limited to a fairly short list of instruments that could actually use the data their hardware was sending. That list keeps growing, and a synth with the depth and reputation of Zebra is a significant addition to it.

For producers who already own Zebra2 and have been eyeing an MPE controller, Zebra 3's release is a good moment to make the jump — the upgrade path is inexpensive, and the modulation architecture that made the original synth so capable is now built to take full advantage of per-note data. For everyone else, it's one more sign that MPE is quickly moving from a niche feature to a standard expectation in serious synthesis tools.
